I created this Back to School Name Glyph activity for grades 1-5. You could do this at any time during the first week of school.
You’ll need to have your student’s names printed out in some type of block or bubble letters that they can fill in with the various patterns and colors. Here are links to some free ones that you can download:

I like to back them with colored cardstock or construction paper, laminate, and place them above or below student work that I have displayed in the classroom or hallway. You can see some of my 2nd graders' glyphs in the pic below:
